No Bull Biltong
South African born, New Zealand cured...
Kevin, who is in the process of setting up a small business, asked me to create a logo and some packaging designs for his biltong business. He wasn't sure of the artistic direction he wanted to go, so asked me to come up with a couple of initial moodboard that we could use as a jumping off point.Â
I wanted to be able to bring Kevin a couple of very different designs, and when I looked at what kind of packaging I wanted to make, there was a lot in this kind of pop-art, rubber-hose type drawings and I thought making a mascot for his brand would be great!
I also knew that he has a somewhat more rugged/outdoorsy aesthetic personally, so I thought providing a moodboard with that kind of vibe could be a nice easy extension of him, and a good contrast to the slightly more "out there" cartoony feel of the other moodboard.

To my delight, Kevin loved the more mascot centred design and loved the direction I was headed with the caricature of him I had started. This also lead to me wanting to include a bull, as the name is "no bull" it seemed to fit!
Initially I was thinking about making each character represent each flavour, however we both agreed that this would start getting out of hand if the range ended up growing significantly, so we decided to make the bull the main logo, while the caricature of Kevin would remain just that.
The packaging is still a work in progress. We're continually printing, testing the functionalities and limitations of different styles of packaging. However we're super excited about the initial ideas and I'm looking forward to what we can produce as we keep testing!
