Crash Bandihoot

This was a long evolving process that helped me learn a lot as a designer! Crash Bandihoot are a local Wellington brass frontline New Orleans style brass band. I was aked to create a logo for them and was really excited to get involved as I was a big fan of the music they were playing and it seemed like a fun project!

Initially I was just asked to replicate and polish up a drawing from one of the band members. This was a really cute flaming trumpet on wheels that I coloured with some purples and yellows to echo the New Orleans style of the music they played.

This wasn't really hitting the mark and they asked if I could play around and draw up a few ideas, not really sure what they did want, but they would know it when they saw it.

After a couple of initial sketches, we liked the idea of the hand holding the trumpet, so I pushed on with a couple of different version and tentatively looked at some colour combinations. I knew that we were looking to include a purple and yellow, and we wanted the colours to be fun, bright, vibrant and happy, to match the energy of the music they played. After a while of development it was decided that maybe this would look a little childish, and we should explore a few more options.

We started to look at the Kiwi aspect of the band, that it was at the heart of it a New Zealand band that's playing New Orleans style music, so maybe we should look at developing a logo that highlights that. The idea was then to see if we could combine a fern and a fleur de lis!

From there we were unsure if we wanted the more hand drawn version or more of the vector version. Both looked similar, however I advocated for the vector version, as they were keen to include a more stylized display font for the wording of the band name. From here they also weren't sure which direction they wanted to go so asked me to come up with a few ideas.

We unfortunatley weren't able find something that satisfied the brief and decided that they would go back to the drawing board and have a think with the rest of the band about they type of direction they wanted to go with the logo. I've included this in my portfolio though because I love some of the logo designs I came up with and I think there's a lot of creative work here that I'm proud of.
